The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is an excellent choice for a family dog, but as you will learn they aren't for everyone. GSP's are most happy when truly made part of the family. They are very intelligent, energetic, determined and loyal. Because of their intelligence they enjoy the challenge of learning Being of good size and bred for the outdoors they don't make good apartment pets.

GSP's have an extended puppy hood (about 5 years) as do most sporting breeds, you need to be aware of this. This extended puppy hood does seem to keep them young at heart well into the golden years. There is nothing like an old GSP's love of life. Being the clowns that they are they have a great sense of humor and very entertaining to live with. They are most happy when they have one of the "treasures" from their toy box in their mouth they can show off with. Ours love stuffed animals.

Before choosing the right breed for your family and lifestyle you need to learn all you can about the characteristics of the breeds you are interested in. Breed characteristics are what truly make a Purebred dog. Please make an informed and intelligent choice in buying that puppy. A dog is a lifelong commitment, in GSP's that should be approximately 12 years. When buying a pet don't rush out and buy the first cute puppy you see, all puppies are cute.

Buy from a reputable breeder! A reputable breeder will take a real interest and concern in the health and welfare of every dog they breed and sell for the life of that dog. When you buy a Shortales GSP you become an extension of our family. You should expect many questions from us so we can properly evaluate if you are a good match for one of our dogs. You should expect a written contract so everyone knows what is expected of each other.
